This end-of-terrace home in Harpenden is transformed through bold front and rear extensions that turn a redundant garage and outdated lean-to into modern, characterful living spaces.
The redesign begins at the front, where a new study and refreshed façade give the home a confident, contemporary presence. Our signature ‘stacked walls’—crafted from charred Accoya timber—provide privacy, sculptural impact, and a warm play of light and shadow. They also reduce the need for heavy foundations and support planting and biodiversity.
Sustainability sits at the heart of the project. By reusing 60% of the existing structure, we cut waste and carbon while unlocking valuable new space for the family.
At the rear, a sunken, angular extension opens the house to the garden. A dramatic overhang forms a sheltered outdoor room, while carefully shaped openings frame views and bring the landscape into daily life.
Inside, exposed douglas fir timber structure, generous rooflights, and floor-to-ceiling glazing create a warm, natural atmosphere. A streamlined kitchen and sunken dining anchor the space, making the extension a ambient heart of the home.
