An extension to a former historic pub cohesively forms a kitchen diner space in this now family home.
The layered shingle facade was chosen to reflect the pattern of time. Each shingle is unique and tactile – whether it has been charred to a crackled or a smooth black finish. Much like the original building’s gnarled timbers, the composition symbolises an ever-changing quality.
The long-format shingles were constructed off site by a local fabricator to our bespoke dimensions and ‘Yakisugi’ Japanese charring requirements. We mocked up several prototypes and trialled them for degrees of pitch, water runoff and overall longevity. We settled on a process that discreetly hides the fixings while maintaining the shingles’ ability to clear water away from the building.
Inside, the space is defined by a series of exposed glulam beams, oiled white these beams filter light from the skylight above. The purpose built kitchen has high contrasting doors with plywood detailing, scalloped handles and stone tops.
The dining space uses a wraparound bench which morphs with the interior oversized reveals of the window and door. All fabricated from poplar plywood the space is a haven for muted tones, picking up subtle changes of light and shadow throughout the day.
